As queer artists become gradually more accepted in the mainstream media, the scope for their space to talk about queerness itself increases. This is really evident in the opening song of the album, “Seventeen,” – a song about a minor desiring someone more experienced, an interested and perhaps risky choice for a major pop album. “ We had started writing the song and all knew very well what it was about,” Troje reflected. “We wrote multiple versions, some that felt darker than others and some that felt maybe too celebratory of that experience — it was a really tough balance. I came close to not pursuing it any further because I didn't want to condone this kind of experience and behavior, but at the same time, me personally, I felt like it was really informative in shaping who I am.”
